Allahabad High Court Verdict a Strong Warning Against Arbitrary Policing of Prayers on Private Land: Maulana Mahmood Madani

New Delhi, February 4: President of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Maulana Mahmood Madani, has welcomed the recent verdict of the Allahabad High Court, describing it as a clear and decisive reaffirmation of the constitutional right to religious freedom guaranteed under Article 25 of the Constitution of India.
Reacting to the judgment, Maulana Madani said that over the past few years—particularly in Uttar Pradesh—there have been several instances where FIRs were registered, arrests were made, and police action was taken merely for offering prayers or holding religious gatherings. He said that peaceful religious worship was wrongly projected as a law-and-order issue, causing unnecessary fear and distress among law-abiding citizens.
“Better late than never, the High Court’s ruling has now provided much-needed constitutional clarity,” Maulana Madani said. “It sends a strong message that fundamental rights cannot be curtailed at the discretion of the administration. The Constitution guarantees citizens the right to worship, and this right can neither be suspended nor taken away arbitrarily by the State.”
With the holy month of Ramadan approaching, Maulana Madani expressed hope that the Uttar Pradesh police administration would honour the spirit of the judgment and that people must be allowed to perform their religious obligations without fear or interference. He also advised community leaders and organisers to keep a copy of the court’s order for reference.
Reiterating Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind’s long-standing commitment to peace, social harmony, and the rule of law, Maulana Madani made it clear that no compromise on constitutional rights is acceptable. “If religious freedom—especially the right to worship—is restricted despite clear judicial rulings, we will not hesitate to pursue appropriate constitutional and legal remedies,” he asserted.
